Café Medina and Mealshare host Waffle Breakfast with Mission Possible

On this year's International Waffle Day on March 25, Café Medina was honoured to partner with local charity Mission Possible through the Mealshare program. For every one of our signature Belgian Liège waffles ordered that day, we pledged to feed one person in need in our community.

On June 16, Café Medina and Mealshare organized a special waffle breakfast at the Mission Possible headquarters in the Downtown Eastside, sharing hundreds of our Liége waffles with those less fortunate.

NovusTV host Alyssa Dawson was on location at Mission Possible to capture all of the action from this unforgettable and inspiring morning. Watch the full video here.

Café Medina is a year-round supporter of the Mealshare program. With the order of each “Le Peameal” bacon and egg sandwich served every day at the restaurant, we donate a meal back to those in need.

#MedinaMemory: How owner Robbie Kane met his wife, Medina

RobbieMedina.jpg

Every great romance has an auspicious beginning. A chance meeting. A sideways glance. A certain spark that lights the flame. In the case of Café Medina owner Robbie Kane, it was equal parts fate, serendipity and pure kismet that led him to find the love of his life in the most likely of places — his own restaurant.

It was back in 2008, shortly after Robbie opened the doors of Café Medina in its original Crosstown location that his great romance began.

After being called into work on a rainy Saturday morning that what was supposed to be his first day off since opening in January, his attention was captured by a woman who was sitting alone at a table for two. She voluntarily offered to Robbie to give up her seat for another party that had arrived, and instead sit at the bar. Her name? None other than Medina.

Originally from Edmonton, Medina, an actress and writer, had recently landed back in Vancouver after being on tour when she spotted the eponymous café and wandered in for the first time, just two weeks after it had opened. Two months later she returned, and began a conversation with Robbie that soon blossomed into a romance.

It was just three years after that initial encounter that Robbie and Medina were married, and one year later they welcomed their son, Jude.

Had Robbie opted to name the café “Gypsy” — his original intention — Medina might never have graced the restaurant with her presence. However, fate played its hand and lit a fuse that still burns brightly today.

Celebrate International Waffle Day with Café Medina and Mealshare

On Wednesday, March 25, Café Medina is set to mark International Waffle Day by partnering with local charity Mission Possible through the Mealshare program to provide meals to those in need in local Vancouver communities.

For every one of our signature Belgian Liège waffles ordered on March 25, Café Medina will feed one person through Mealshare, a non-profit initiative that partners with local restaurants to provide meals to the less fortunate. Whether enjoyed in the restaurant or packaged to-go, our trademark waffles ($3.15) may be accented with 11 different toppings ranging from savoury selections like salted caramel and peach & bourbon butterscotch to sweet-tooth specialties such as milk chocolate lavender, white chocolate pistachio rosewater and quince cranberry compote for $1 each, as well Earnest Cardamom Ice Cream for dine-in guests for $2.

Beyond the International Waffle Day initiative, Café Medina is already a supporter of the Mealshare program. With the order of each “Le Peameal” bacon and egg sandwich served every day at the restaurant, a meal is donated back to those in need. Since first partnering with Mealshare last summer, we've provided 2,873 meals to date throughout the local community.
